Flying into Sicily for a Cruise

It is so simple to fly into Sicily from almost anywhere. You have four big airports in Sicily that you can fly into, so that you can access Sicily. When arriving in Sicily by plane, it is most convenient to choose an airport close to where your boat will be leaving or where it will dock. Palermo (PMO) (best positioned for north/northwest Sicily) and Catania (CTA) ( best positioned for east coast, i.e., Taormina and Syracuse) are the sole two international airports. Trapani and Comiso are alternatives in terms of flying time.

Let us discover something about the peculiarity of each one of the Sicilian airports. Also, determine the speciality of each one of them, so that they can welcome tourists.

Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO): Gateway to the West

Start your Sicily holiday on arrival at Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport. The most stunning island of Italy’s west coast. Colourful Palermo, the capital city, welcomes PMO each year with over 7.1 million visitors. Apart from Palermo, you have the friendly west coast of Sicily, the picturesque Cefalù towns, and the ancient Segesta ruins.

Palermo Airport, why?

Activities: Norman Palace heritage, Quattro Canti, Massimo Theatre. Also, the Palatine Chapel, culture, museums, and Mercato di Ballaro.

Facilities: Car-accessible treasures along Mondello, Capo Gallo, Addaura, and Capaci beaches.

Nightlife: Relax with diverse nightlife ranging from wine bars and nightclubs to the Ucciria night market.

Hiking: Walking in Cape Gallo Nature Reserve, Monte Cape Gallo, and Monte Santa Margherita is an alternative.

Food: High-class Sicilian restaurants, street food, and multicultural restaurants.

Shopping: Alternative shopping therapy on the high-end designers, indigenous boutiques. Along with quaint markets such as Mercato di La Vucciria.

Day Trips: Start your vacation in Erice, Cefalu, Marsala, and Agrigento. Explore the renowned Valley of the Temples.

Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA): East portal

Catania Fontanarossa Airport is the door to discovery for those attracted by the landscapes of Sicily’s east coast. One of the lovely southern Italian airports. It welcomes travellers to and from the area with a full complement of domestic and foreign flights. This airport provides you with access to all the major city areas. If you’ve travelled through this airport or explored nearby attractions, do take a moment to share your experience with fellow travellers.

Activities: UNESCO World Heritage attractions. Such as Catania Cathedral, Baroque city view, and Castello Ursino. Experience Mt. Etna adventure excursions, cableway excursions, and hiking in Schiena dell’Asino and Calanna Valley.

Beaches: Catania’s Playa di Catania boasts a distinctive beach with Mt. Etna as a backdrop. Some other beaches are Cyclops Riviera, Torre Pozzillo, Santa Tecla, and Fondachello.

Nightlife: Nightlife in Catania begins at sunset. Discos, bars, jazz clubs, and midnight-square wanderers in old ruins.

Hiking: Great hiking on the Schiena dell’Asino trail and Calanna Valley en route to Mt. Etna.

Food: Catania street food: flavour explosion with arancini, crispelle, pasta alla norma, maccu.

Shopping: Have some shopping therapy at Annapolis and Catania Shopping Centre. Walk along Via Etnea and the fish market.

Day Trips: Mount Etna and the nearby provinces of Taormina, Syracuse and Messina.

Good to Know: Palermo & Catania have the same climate, pleasant winters & summer is not hot. Winter minimums are higher than 7°C, and summer maximums are of the order 37-38°C. Catania is warmer as it is nearer to the equator. Palermo gets more rain than Catania. Catania gets more beach weather than Palermo.

Trapani Airport

It is on the north-western shore of lovely Sicily. San Vito Lo Capo beaches here, blue waters, and the golden sand of the location is a dream come true. Egadi Islands, Favignana’s loofah and crystal water being pure must-haves. Marsala, whose fortified wine and historic cobblestone streets lined with old buildings, can’t be avoided.

Comiso Airport

It is located in the south of Sicily. This airport has architectural and cultural gems. Explore Baroque Ragusa, the chocolate-making ancient heritage of Modica, and the serene beaches of Gela. Siracusa’s ruins and vibrant piazzas, just around the corner, are at your doorstep. Comiso is the perfect resort for tourists to explore Sicily’s multi-polar tourist attractions.

Conclusion

Getting to experience flying into Sicily on a Sicily cruise will be an added perk of your cruise, and one additional amenity and luxury. Whether you are flying to the east or west side of Sicily through the top 2 airports, you are making the right decision. PMO and CTA will give you quick and easy access to Sicily’s famous cities, seaports, and resort regions. With proper research and planning, you can catch the right airport on your Mediterranean cruise trip.
